Johanna Zimmerhackel is a PhD student at the University of Western Australia since 2015. Her PhD project focuses on the socio-economics of the shark sanctuary in the Maldives in order to identify management strategies with best outcomes for shark dive tourism, fisheries and shark populations. Johanna has a Bachelor in Biology and a Master of Science in Marine Ecosystems and Fisheries Science from the University of Hamburg, Germany where she studied the bycatch in a small-scale fishery in the Galapagos Islands. Between 2012 and 2015, Johanna served as the scientific director of the German arm from NGO Shark Savers where she collaborated with the Charles Darwin Foundation and conducted shark research projects in the Galapagos Islands. Johanna’s research interests are fisheries and eco-tourism with a focus on marine megafauna. She is especially interested in multi-disciplinary approaches that integrate biological and socio-economic aspects in management and conservation strategies. Johanna Zimmerhackel
